Spring Soil Test Results

July 4, 2017 by Jo Ann Bartsch Leave a Comment

We have received soil test results for several plots in the Garden.  The results are very similar.  Here’s a summary:

  • pH levels are in the range recommended for vegetables. No amendments to correct pH are necessary.
  • Organic material in the soil (where tested) has increased to the recommended level. Good job with the compost!!
  • There are no deficiencies in any of the nutrients tested and needed for vegetable plant growth.
  • The levels of potassium and phosphorus are high (sometimes very high). Therefore, there is no need to add these two minerals to your soil.  Only nitrogen is necessary….carefully read the label on your fertilizer.  Buy one that only has nitrogen.  Use according to instructions; please don’t overfertilize.  (and potentially contribute to a Lake Erie algal blooms!).

Please ask if you have any questions regarding the soil in your plot.

Garden Frontage Gets A New Look

Garden Frontage Gets A New Look

May 12, 2017 by William Makowski 1 Comment

Mike Aube from Troop 810 in Broadview Heights took on an Eagle Scout project to create greater curb appeal for the Greene Acres Community Garden. The project began at the end of the 2016 season and the final touches were added this week. Mike started the project by talking with several garden members to get landscaping ideas and formulate a plan within a specified budget. Once the plan was approved he led a group of youth and adult volunteers from the troop to prepare the soil near the fence line, install landscaping fabric, plant bushes, and mulch with wood chips. He also directed the installation of a flagstone walkway at the gate and added rocks to the landscaping. The bushes appear to be taking well to the surroundings and the garden has received a well deserved face lift. Thank you Mike and Troop 810 for your hard work.
